Flora-Bama Mullet Toss: Flying-Fish Fun on Florida’s Perdido Key

If you think a mullet is just a bad haircut, you probably haven’t heard about the Flora-Bama Lounge’s Annual Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party. A strange — yet satisfying — three-day competition is the centerpiece of this tongue-in-cheek Perdido Key event.

The tournament involves tossing a no-longer-alive mullet — small fish that are found in abundance in local waters — from a 10-foot circle on the beach in Florida across the state line into Alabama. Past winners have tossed mullets more-than 100 feet. When the competition has ended, organizers donate the tossed mullets (frozen, not fresh) to Alligator Alley in Summerdale to feed the gators.

The stage is ready, set, go for the 2024 Flora-Bama Mullet Toss, April 26-28. The fun starts at 10 a.m. each day for kids, and noon to 4 p.m. daily for adults. The Flora-Bama begins charging covers at 9 a.m. Friday-Sunday. The charge is $15 per day for 16–20-year-olds, $10 per day for ages 21 and older. Ages 15 and younger get in free, as do membership-card holders.

The awesome privilege of tossing a mullet costs $20 per person, and all contestants receive an Interstate Mullet Toss T-shirt, similar to the one shown above. The event is cash only, but there are plenty of ATMs onsite.

Finals will be held at 4:30 p.m. all three days, and winners will be announced daily in each category. Local celebrities will also come out daily at 4 p.m. to toss a few fish but won’t be eligible for prizes.

Proceeds from the Mullet Toss, which average around $40,000 each year benefit the Community Drug and Alcohol Council, Inc., local boys’ and girls’ clubs, and youth groups on both the Alabama and Florida sides of the line.
