January on the Gulf Coast

This photo says it all!

We love to go to the beach during the off-season. September and October are the best months for enjoying great weather, fishing and fun without the summer crowds and heat, but we also love to go just after Christmas. We spend so much of the holiday season indoors as the days get shorter and shorter that we are just thrilled to arrive in Destin in late December to enjoy the sunny days and warmer weather.

This year we had beautiful weather, with average temperatures ranging from the low to upper sixties. We went swimming — well, I went into the hot tub while everyone else went into the heated pool. It was a breezy day, the coldest of the week — around 63 degrees. We loved it! We also took afternoon boat rides almost every day, only once needing a heavy jacket with maybe a hood or cap. (Many of the tourist boats and dolphin cruises were also out in the harbor and bay.) We went bike riding, walking on the beach, searching for sea shells, shopping without crowds, and dining without crowds. We flew kites and played in the waves on the beach. Not bad days for January!
